Due to the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, the stream bed level of Mangarara Stream has lifted 60cm in places. This has increased silt issues and caused a significant loss of topsoil.
In response, the Mangarara Catchment Group requested expert support to help increase their knowledge and capability in developing an erosion control and silt retention plan. The group wanted expert guidance in developing managment strategies that they could implement as part of recovery works from the cyclone event to mitigate the sedimentation.
Through A2E, Matt Highway (Element Environmental) provided their expert support. Matt undertook a site walkover with Mangarara Catchment Group representatives; this identified priority sites along the stream that require erosion and silt retention interventions. Matt also gave expert gudiance for the group, helping them produce a management plan for implementation, in addition to a meeting to discuss recommendations for mitigation.
With A2E’s support, Mangarara Catchment Group have been empowered to start making decisions about how to best manage areas of Mangarara Stream affected by erosion. The plan, which collates a variety of information and resources into one document, makes it easier for farmers within the catchment to access and apply report findings.
