FOAM is a rural North Auckland based group that seek to restore and maintain a healthy Sandspit Estuary and the Matakana and Glen Eden that feed into it.
After observing significant bank erosion, vegetation loss and high turbidity (muddy or cloudy water) at the top of the catchment, FOAM sought A2E’s expert guidance. Specifically, FOAM wanted support in identifying what was causing erosion, and if there were any possible recommendations for managing this in the upper catchment. This would mean FOAM could enhance the water quality of the entire catchment.
Through A2E, Professor Ian Fuller (Massey University) provided their expert support.
Professor Fuller held a site visit with FOAM members to assess current river conditions and identify key prorities and opportunities.
With a focus on erosion management, Professor Fuller prepared a report that identified:
- what was causing it
- whether erosion was just part of a natural steam process
- measures to help control erosion and the best places to do them.
Where erosion was identified as a a natural steam process, management options were limited. This was identified in the report.
A2E’s support means FOAM now understand what is causing erosion in this part of the upper catchment; and the best location and type of erosion reduction measures that could be considered. FOAM are now working with the landowner to implement the report recommendations
FOAM member Waveney Warth was complimentary of the expert support received.
“It’s been a privilege to have Ian’s expertise through A2E.
“We really appreciate the time you have taken to finalise the report. It’s a valuable resource for us,” says Warth.
